Our growth is limited by worrying about what others think.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞'𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠.

We worry too much about what others think about us rather than what helps us achieve our purpose.

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘳?

I stumbled across a great way to flex this muscle, learn something and have fun. It has become a big part of how Rebecca del Rio and I connect with people.

𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

An example:

• You invite four friends over.
• You select five bottles of wine. Number them and cover them up.
• Each person has five glasses in front of them.
• Pour the wines in the same order for each person, left to right.
• Have a pen and paper for each person.
• You then go through and discuss, make notes, and try to guess things about the wine (this depends on the tasting you’ve prepared; see below).

I find wine tasting is one of those things no one wants to say the wrong thing and sound stupid. So, it promotes conformity and being ‘right’. People just want to know the right thing to say rather than discover what they think.

In a blind wine tasting where you have to write down your answers, there’s nowhere to hide. You then realise it’s not that scary; why don’t I do this across my life?

For anyone into wine. Some great tasting I’ve done recently:

• Shiraz: cool climate vs warm climate.
• Marsanne: Norther Rhone vs Victoria, aged vs young.
• Cabernet: Bordeaux, Napa, Margaret River, Coonawarra, Yarra Valley, del Rios.
• Chardonnay: unoaked to oaked spectrum, old world vs new world.

My parents have built an amazing winery over the past 28 years, del Rios Winery, making serious single vineyard wild ferment wines. I’m always very proud of how well their wines represent in a blind tasting against some of the best wines in the world.
